Summary:
Small scale cross-border trade (SSCBT) significantly contributes to Zambia’s income generation and job creation for a vast part of Zambia’s poor population. It also contributes to regional food security.
It is important that SSCBT transactions are captured, in order to provide accurate statistics for assessing the performance of the trade sector, not only for Zambia, but for any given country. With support from the 11th European Development Fund (EDF), through the Small-Scale Cross Border Trade Initiative (SSCBTI), the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) in collaboration with the COMESA Secretariat collected data on the import and export volumes by small scale-cross border traders from 2019 to date, of which the results and conclusions from this survey are presented to key partners and stakeholders in a hybrid workshop. This provides an opportunity to determine a way forward on continued SSCBT surveys.
Data were collected at the Nakonde, Kasumbalesa, Chirundu and Mwami borders.
